I am grateful for all people who live love in so many ways... for all those who give it so freely... like my 89 year old Grandmother who endured the pain in her arthritic hands to write me a love letter to share with me her blessings... like my Mama who carefully framed the letter and hung it on the wall in my office... like all the things Mama does to remind me of her kind of love...

I am on a new path... embarking on a challenging and exciting journey... I am back in school! This new chapter of my life will stretch me in ways that I have never been stretched before... I am learning a new language (business acumen), thinking differently (more strategic & analytical) and gaining new skills (decision, leadership, strategy and financial, etc.). This two year program will be a challenge, not only because of the intense work load, aggressive schedule and hard assignments... but because I must have a healthy family-work-life-school balance. Being a wife, mother (of 2 toddlers), assuming a new role at work (Business Development Manager - Energy Efficiency & Conservation), exercising (Lifetime Fitness), reading/studying, completing assignments, attending church (Victory World Church), networking (professional/personal), prayer/meditation and sharing quality time with family & friends, among other things must all be balanced effectively... I am determined to survive this and do the best that I can.

To build my faith, perseverance and positivity, I created a vision board that I look at every morning and every night... a reminder of my purpose, passion, power and persistence. I speak into existence... what is so.... my words are very powerful... therefore I choose/use them wisely.

Tarece Johnson-Hassell, AGL Resources' Supplier Diversity manager, has been selected as the Atlanta region honoree to receive the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency's Distinguished Supplier Diversity of the Year award.

The Minority Business Development Agency at the U.S. Department of Commerce is the only federal agency dedicated to advancing the establishment and growth of minority-owned firms in the United States. Through a network of minority business centers and strategic partners, MBDA works with minority entrepreneurs who wish to grow their businesses in size, scale and capacity. The Distinguished Supplier Diversity of the Year award recognizes individuals for their accomplishments in diversity advocacy; overcoming technical and competitive diversity challenges; and overall economic, environmental and societal contributions.

Tarece was selected as the Atlanta region honoree for her innovative, unique and creative approach to the development and growth of the AGL Resources Supplier Diversity Program. Since 2006, Tarece has been cultivating a new way of thinking for employees when it comes to selecting contractors and suppliers for the company. LEGACY - MICHAEL JACKSON

The earth stopped revolving… for a moment…with the last beat of Michael Jackson’s heart. The new moon accepted his spirit… to be reborn… to start an everlasting journey full of peace, love and joy. May his legacy be one that never ends… a story that continues to transcend generations and boundaries. Martin Luther King changed the nation through his ministry and movements, James Brown revolutionized music and dance with the infusion of deep southern soul, Michael Jackson united the world, he moved, touched and inspired all nations through his songs, and Barack Obama continues to transform our world through his motivational leadership. There are so many other African American/Black men who have made a significant impact in our world… I honor them all. I celebrate their lives, not only as past… but present and future. These remarkable men have paved the way for so many of us, specifically our African American/Black men… and continue to mold our boys to realize greatness and be the source of their own powerful legacies.

There are so many stories of how we have been impacted through the lives of these men, they met us at a “crossroads” in our life, led us to go in a certain direction and/or inspired us to “Make a Change”… “To be Black & Proud” and to know that “Yes We Can!”

As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world better”. Toussaint Louverture, Frederick Douglas, James Weldon Johnson, Marcus Garvey, Halle Sallasie, Langston Hughes, Barack Obama, Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X, James Brown, Carter G. Woodson, JESUS, Martin Luther King and countless other “men of color” … have shaped our thought through their uniqueness and courage. They made a difference and touched the lives of many… and collectively changed our world. I salute these men. Through their legacies, they all in some way or another… inspired, moved and touched Michael Jackson… they shaped the genius, that ministered to our hearts.
Today and forever I remember Michael in a happy way… not the sadness and loneliness that he spoke of, not the exploitation of his character through news/media or the psycho-social issues he may have endured… always…I remember his LOVE. Michael loved me and you… he loved all of his fans… those who appreciated his music and relished in his genius.

Never, ever forget that he loved us… he loved that we fed his spirit… we helped him to momentarily be in a world free of pain and suffering. Through our letters, cheers, attendances at his performances and music/product purchases, Michael Jackson felt a force so powerful… it was like a balm that healed his pain… that mended his broken heart. His adoring fans moved his soul… as we were mesmerized by his voice… entranced by his dance and glamoured by the lyrics in his music… Michael Jackson was being fulfilled so deeply… we may not have realized that he needed us as much as we wanted him.

For infinity…he will live on… as his spirit is reborn anew. His short life on earth is a reminder to live life and BE in each moment… to realize the NOW of each day… to be healthy and happy. You never know when your last moment will come and when you will be invited to pass on to the “other side” to be “reborn”. Through Michael’s earthly death, we are moved to live differently. As we commit to cherishing the moments of our life, may we consciously notice the butterfly that flutters by, the hummingbird that sings ever so gently, the cricket that chirps melodies of love and the deer that prances through a never ending forest… for these may be the “reborn spirits” of the fearless, creative and dedicated.

May we deliberately care for our world and it inhabitants… may we be the humanitarian like Michael, the animal enthusiast like Michael, the naturist like Michael… may we love as freely and be as genius as Michael. May we understand that we too have the power to make a change, to impact the world and to create our own legacies of power…

Michael shall remain with us… a little part of him, is a part of us…through his music he will live on in our minds and hearts…FOREVER.

Princess Hannah is now 3 years old... how time flies... she is such a dynamic and fun little girl. She is smart, funny and so very kind. Hannah has a BIG personality and she is just a wonderful little spirit...

Prince Nile is so very sensitive and loving. He loves to eat and is blessed with a smile that just melts your heart. Nile is a Mama's boy and he loves to be cuddled, kissed and held...

I am so blessed to have this joy in my life... my special moments with Hannah are reading and talking with her... my special moments with Nile are sharing smiles and gazing in his eyes as he peers into my soul...

I am so happy, blessed and thankful. I am healthy, my hair is growing and my leg & knee are stronger. I am still not really able to run and I have difficulty climbing stairs, but I am grateful that I am walking. When you see me strutting (except for the unslightly scar) you will not notice that I am slightly "disabled".

I am working out at the gym and I am pleased with the results. I am loosing fat and toning up... although I still have a weakness for carbohydrates (pastas & breads, oh & cakes. pies, cookies, etc.).

I now weigh about 139 lbs. (I'd like to still loose about 15 more pounds... if I reduce my carbs, I'll probably reach my goal beofre 2010). In any case, I will continue to excersize and be the Queen that I am destined to be.

My hair is so very beautiful and healthy... I LOVE MY HAIR. I do miss the length, but I am not attached to how long it WAS, but more focused on growing it back healthy and long.

Princess Like Me

Growing up as a little girl, I struggled with images that were "defined as beautiful" and "righteous". I did not have dolls that looked as diverse as my family. My favorite doll (Cauliflower Kid)... I named him Terry (he had blond hair and blue eyes)... I loved him so... even today when I think of Terry I wonder 'what ever happened to him?'... I have fond memories of my doll. I owned other dolls that had long brunette, blond or red hair. I enjoyed the ease of combing their hair and wondered why my hair was not as "pretty". Out of frustration and determination (at age 6-7) , I charged to my Mom's bathroom and decided to straighten my hair (via a relaxer)... I wanted it to be smooth and silky like Barbie... long story short... I had chemical burns and long-term dry scalp issues that required me to see a dermatologist for about 2 years.

Fast forward years later... I have beautiful natural hair and I love every brown skinned inch of me. I appreciate diversity (thought, race, gender, religion, ethnicity, etc.) and I respect every individual. I believe in the power of humanity and diversity and I am committed to teaching my children to love, honor and respect ALL people.

In less that 25 years Hispanics, Asians and Blacks/African Americans will collectively be the "majority" (in US). Barack Obama's Presidency is after all about "change"... the change in our views, demographics and respect for others (irregardless of race), etc. Our children are growing up in a very different world than we did when we were their age. Our children have diversity all around them, from dolls to cartoons to teachers to our President. I am so ecstatic that with all of this, my daughter will even grow up with a Princess that looks like her. (I totally accept that for the next few years (or forever), I'll be going to 'Princess Tiana' themed birthday celebrations, tea-parties, holloween events, etc. Heck, Hannah's 4th birthday party (5/14/2010) will be themed: Princess Hannah (inspired by Princess Tiana). I am delaying her princess themed party until Tiana merchandise is released).

BODY - HAIR - SKIN - Phenomenal Woman

It has been a few weeks since I last updated this blog…

Body
I am walking so much better now (less limping)… I am still in physical therapy (twice a week) and I work out regularly. It is quite challenging to do leg extensions and walk up stairs, but my knee & leg are getting stronger. My range of motion (bending of my left knee) has significantly improved (from 30 degrees to 133 degrees). I now weigh approximately 137 lbs. My goal is to continue to decrease my body fat, build muscle and increase flexibility. I would like to weigh about 125lbs. (or 130 with more muscle mass).

Hair
My hair is healthy and it is growing fast. After using several expensive products (Carol’s Daughter, Miss Jessie’s, Mixed Chicks, etc.) I rediscovered the products that I used eight years ago when I first cut my hair to grow it back napturally. Progress

My last appointment with Dr. Mines was quite relieving. Dr. Mines said that I have progressed substantially and he does not believe that it is necessary for me undergo the manual manipulation (while under general anesthesia). Dr. Mines encouraged me to continue to work really hard with my physical therapist and to consistently bend my knee to improve my range of motion. He is also very cautious and is managing my expectations... Dr. Mines told me that I may never be able to bend my left knee as I did before, but that I should be thankful that I can walk. Dr. Mines encouraged me to walk without a cane and to focus on walking straight (no limping). I am now walking and with much conscious effort, I do not limp. (I need to practice on walking without a limp naturally - I tend to prefer my stronger right leg).

11/08 = 30 degrees
12/08 = 50 degrees

I am committed to working diligently and consistently to 1) increase my flexibility (range of motion), 2) build strength and definition and 3) decrease body fat. I work out at least 4 days a week.

I resolve to change my life style... to live a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life. As part of this resolution, I recently joined a gym: http://www.lifetimefitness.com/

This gym is perfect for families, especially those parents who may need childcare while they work out. It is also a great place for busy people who claim not to have time to workout (it is open 24 hours). My physical therapist highly encouraged me to consistently participate in water aerobics. As part of my therapy I will attend an aqua aerobics class every Wednesday & Friday morning (before my session with my therapist). I also plan to go to the gym with the children on the weekends... the children can play while I workout then we can all enjoy the indoor heated pool as a family. I am so excited about getting back in shape (losing fat) and gaining strength & flexibility. I am currently a size 6/7, but I would like to be a more toned/defined size 4/5.

Happy & Healthy New Year... Napturally

Happy New Year! Christmas & Kwanzaa were very special family celebrations this year. Sharing this time with my mother, husband and children was really beautiful.

My leg and knee are healing and getting stronger. Physical therapy is challenging but I am getting consistent results. Although I have a "horrible" keloid scar, I am pleased with my recovery. I am walking with a cane now... (sometimes without). I can even dance (moving my upper and mid body while carefully making a slight dip (knee bend))! Over these past few weeks I have reached significant milestones... I am so blessed.

Because I can not bend my knee past 90 degrees (due to excessive scar tissue), Dr. Mines will manually manipulate my knee (bend to break scar tissue) while I am under general anesthesia. This should help me to bend my knee and regain more flexibility as I continue physical therapy. This procedure may happen sometime in January or February.

My hair is growing back beautifully and it is thick and so very healthy. I love touching my hair... natural hair is so beautiful to me. I am excited to experience this journey of growing my hair back long, strong and healthy... "napturally"...

Road to Recovery

My most recent follow-up appointment with Dr. Mines was very encouraging. My wound healed close and there are no signs of infection. Considering the operation/incision and delayed healing – my scar does not look as bad as Dr. Mines previously predicted…there may also be less keloiding. I am so thankful for my healing. Dr. Mines informed me that the new x-rays of my leg/knee show that my tibia bone is healing perfectly and I am now able to put pressure on my leg/knee. Because I have a 30 degree range of motion in my knee, scar tissue build-up and I struggled to walk, Dr. Mines said that I must start physical therapy as soon as possible (3 days/week).

Dr. Mines encouraged me to work with Mr. Michael Polasick, PT, ATC (owner of TheraSport) because he believes that Mr. Polasick is the best, they share office space and Dr. Mines will be able to monitor me more closely.

As I proceeded to schedule my first 3 sessions, Mr. Polasick and Dr. Mines agreed that I should start therapy immediately to help to stimulate muscle to facilitate my ability to put pressure on my leg so that I may start to step. Mr. Polasick first conducted an analysis of my current physical limitations to enable him to appropriately track my progression. He also warned me that due to my current state, I am going to have to endure a lot of intensive quality physical therapy to have full range of motion in my knee and be able to walk normally. He encouraged me to do as much bending of my knee as I can tolerate everyday while I am home. After a two hour session of muscle stimulation and knee bending, I was able to step better (not sure if it was due to the therapy or my increased confidence… maybe both). In any case, I am now stepping with both feet while using my walker. I am so excited to be on the path to recovery... I am one step closer to dancing salsa...

Healing

Since the staples were removed from my incision, I started to notice blood and brown pus sipping from a small section (2 in. on my knee). I increasingly grew concerned as this section of the incision site started to develop an unpleasant odor. I called Dr. Mines today to inform him of my concerns and he requested to see me immediately.

Dr. Mines informed me today that this section of the incision is not healing properly and starting to develop into a slight infection. He told me not to worry, that the infection did not spread under the skin or in the wound. For precautionary purposes, he prescribed an antibiotic, Keflex (500 mg): http://antibiotics.emedtv.com/keflex/keflex.html. I was also instructed to clean the entire incision site with alcohol three times a day and to cover the infected site with an alcohol soaked gauze pad. Dr. Mines informed me that this incision site is developing into a hyperthropic scar or keloid: http://www.emedicine.com/derm/TOPIC205.HTM.

I am relieved that I do not have an infected inner wound, however I am very disappointed that I have this hideous extra flesh growing over 2 inches of my skin on my knee (thank God this kind of scarring is not on the entire incision). As Dr. Mines reminded me of the fact that it is more important that I focus on being able to walk than the ugly scar, I thought to myself ‘this is going to be a very long emotionally and physically draining journey’. I pray that I will continue to heal without infection. I also hope to (maybe next year) visit a dermatologist to remove or at least diminish this unsightly keloid. (God will not give me more than I can handle.)

Dr. Mines informed me that it is necessary to practice bending my knee, because he fears that since I have not bent my knee (only very slightly) that I will develop hard scar tissue that will inhibit or make it very difficult for me to completely recover. He says that I must start to bend my knee to help stretch the muscles and break the scar tissue. He also instructed me to start to take the prescribed medication again to manage the pain I will feel as I practice bending my knee.

I am committed to healing and bending my knee. I know that I must practice bending my knee to facilitate the physical therapy I will endure in about six more weeks... so that I may walk again.

Staples Removed

Today Dr. Mines removed the staples from the incision on my left leg/knee. He replaced the staples with medical tape to maintain the bond of my skin. I still have quite a bit of swelling and numbness, but Dr. Mines said that these are normal. Dr. Mines also reminded me that I must not bare any pressure on my left leg; he said that my bone is still fractured and the metal and screws are simply holding the fracture together... but the bone is not strong yet, so in order for me to heal properly I must not walk. Dr. Mines said that it will take at least 6 months for my bone to be strong and the fracture to heal. My next appointment with Dr. Mines is on November 28th. He will examine the incision site, take another x-ray and hopefully determine when I should start physical therapy.

Today, my mother left to return to Houston, Texas. She will be back in a few weeks. We will miss her... she was such a blessing to us. We look forward to her return very soon...

Mama & My First Doctor's Visit

My mother is assisting Gerald to help care for me and our children. My mom has been an invaluable resource to us … she is cleaning, washing clothes, preparing meals, bathing the children, running errands and organizing our home, among other things. We are so blessed to have her with us during this difficult time.

Last Friday (10/24), was my first follow-up appointment after my surgery. My mother transported me to the doctor’s office. Our trip was quite comical; first it took us 30 minutes to get me into the car. We had to strategize how I would get from the couch to the car without harming myself or her. My mother tried to put the wheel chair in the trunk of the car, but the trunk did not close… she then attempted to secure the wheel chair by tying a rope on the wheelchair and the trunk hood. As we were on our way… I heard a thump… I looked back and realized the wheelchair was not properly secured. Mama stopped the car, readjusted the hood and tied the rope tighter. I asked my mom if she removed the leg piece from the wheelchair and she said that she did not know that the leg could be removed. I chuckled and said, “well that’s why the trunk will not close… the leg is still attached”. Fifteen minutes later we arrived to the doctor’s office (Eastside Orthopedics).

Because we have a handicap parking permit, we were confident that we would find parking fairly quickly. After a few laps around the parking lot, we could not find a single handicapped parking spot. (Of course, we could not find a spot, we were at an orthopedic doctor’s office!!!) Mama helped to get me to the lobby, then she left me to park the car. Three minutes later, Mama walked in the building with papers, purses and a big purple portable urine container. I was mortified with embarrassment!!! “Mama”, I said, “Please be more discreet, look what you’re holding”. She laughed and said, simply, “Oh”, and hid the container in the arm of her coat.

I was relieved to finally be sitting in the Doctor’s office. I was anxious about the visit because this would be the first time that I would see my wound. The nurse called me in the examination room, took post-op x-rays and commenced to remove the leg brace and bandages. As she removed the bandages, I started to notice staples! I was shocked because I expected to see stitches. There were so many staples… from the top of my knee to the middle of my leg… my eyes watered as I saw all of the staples, blood and the scar! My incision was still very new and numb. The nurse cleaned my leg with alcohol and redressed the incision site. Dr. Mines said that I am healing perfectly and the scaring may not be as smooth as he had hoped because two staples popped from my knee. Other than that, Dr. Mines said that I will be okay and that the titanium metal secured with 9 screws to my leg bone and knee is positioned perfectly. I asked Dr. Mines if I will be able to dance salsa one day… he said that with good physical therapy I should be able dance salsa by this time next year!

Before leaving the office, Dr. Mines, showed us how to remove the leg from the wheelchair so that it may fit in the trunk of the car...

Legacy of Power

My journey is one of continuous self discovery and spiritual awakening. I have always been empathetic to the “disabled”, but now… I truly understand what it “feels” like to have limited mobility, to have others do things for you that you’d much rather do for yourself, to have less of a degree of personal privacy. With my limitations, I have found unique “pockets” of freedom, and moments of frustration; yet, I am aware and accept this chapter in my life. I am conscious of being in this space and studying what I need to learn for self improvement. My husband, Dr. Gerald Hassell, has created a model for self actualization and exploration. He has created a seven step process to living a legacy of power.

Legacy of Power is the biological, spiritual, and cultural gifts willed to you by your ancestors as a result of their determination to survive from one generation to the next. (This journey that I travel is another opportunity for me to apply these seven steps. I will share with you the first two steps.) The first step to living a legacy of power is awareness. It is important to be aware of who you are and where you come from. You may gain in awareness by creating space to be still and quiet to enable you to hear your inner voice and spirit… be more fully present to who you are as a person absent from the preconceived perceptions society has “defined” as who you are supposed to be. You may achieve awareness by researching your history and culture through communication with elders in your community (parents, grandparents and broader community).

In order to fully utilize and create your legacy, you must accept it. The second step, acceptance empowers you to learn from your ancestors – their victories, failures, successes and defeats. In this step, you must take responsibility to end the destructive cycles and continue productive cycles that are a part of your legacy. Acceptance begins the process of healing wounds that have been passed down as part of a destructive legacy and focusing on the positive things that are apart of your family. Acceptance is important in the process of utilization… you must first accept
your gifts into your consciousness… your identity and who you are as a person –
then you must learn to master your strengths and gifts.

I learned of my legacy from my both grandmothers (oral history) - they told stories of people who worked hard and suffered, yet they were proud… they did not have everything they wanted... but felt that they had all that they needed (God, family and love). Part of the legacy passed down to me is one of long suffering. Everyday I feel better. I am taking less pain medication and able to endure the aching and throbbing. I am very positive about my recovery and visualize the day that I can hear my favorite music (salsa) and dance to the beat of the African drums and Latin rhythms. With the growth of my beautiful natural hair and gaining the strength/movement in my left leg, I dream about being synchronized with the instruments that contribute to the spirit of salsa… I see myself twisting my hips as I lift my left leg in a twirl and sway my neck powerfully as my hair follows me through the turn. I smile… so brightly… my eyes…the gateway to my soul…reflect the all of God’s glory. I am content… I am blessed...

Family

Yesterday, I arrived home from the hospital. I am content to be back in my space... a place of love, peace and joy... where true healing may take place. I believe that I will recover beautifully in this sacred environment that Gerald and I created with our two beautiful children.

During my stay in the hospital I was in extreme pain. I was allowed to self-administer morphine through a pump that sent the medication through my IV. The morphine did not fully stop the constant torture I was enduring, for this reason the doctor also allowed me to take a pill, percocet (http://www.rxlist.com/percocet-drug.htm). Between the morphine and the percocet, I was able to manage my pain. While in the hospital, I also had an increase in my temperature (fever) and slight fluid build up in my lungs; the doctor required me to breathe in a tube every two hours to keep my lungs clear (this also helped to reduce my fever).

Oye, the physical therapist from Nigeria came by to teach me how to maneuver with a walker. He also shared with me a few stories of his family and told me about the markings on his face. The nurse assistant aka "the mean one" expressed how she disliked her job and was underpaid... this attitude was reflected in the mediocre service she provided. I cringed and my pain increased every time she walked in my room. She literally made me sick (I did not trust her). These are times that I am reminded of how important family is and how nice it is to have family near.

My mother arranged a flight from Houston to be with me during the operation, but the surgery was scheduled earlier than expected. My mom will be here tonight. She is on the airplane now, on her way to care for me and my family. I am so grateful that she is taking the time from her life to be here. I look forward to recovering with her by my side.

Family is always there to protect you, love you and never leave you alone especially when you are suffering. Of course, no family is "perfect", but when you really "need" family... they are there. Although I did not have any visitors at the hospital, I felt the love from my family and I sensed the positive energy from all the prayers and thoughts of those who care for me. For those of you who sent flowers, e-mails, messages, and shared with me words of encouragement... THANK YOU. To my sisters... my beloveds... THANK YOU. To those of you who made so many special sacrifices to help me... THANK YOU.

There are many people that come in your life to supplement "family". As I reminisce on each phase in my life I remember the remarkable people God placed in my "world" to be my "family". To my "family" reading this post (you know who you are)... THANK YOU for EVERYTHING.

Now, living in Georgia, God has blessed us with a remarkable "family"... Yvette & Roland, have sacrificed so much for me and my children. They cared for Hannah and Nile... before my operation and while I was recovering in the hospital. Even before this accident, Yvette has made tremendous sacrifices to help me to be a better mom, professional, woman and wife... I am so eternally grateful.

Family is so important.

Meditation

This is a very special prayer a good friend shared with me that I now share with you. Please pray this with me as I am in surgery from 11am - 1:00pm tomorrow, Friday 10/17. Thank you.

May the healing power of our Lord and Savior grant expedient healing to
your body. May God’s Glory bring comfort to you and may you be healed
completely in Jesus’ name. I bind my faith to yours and because of our
combined faith you shall walk in your healing. Remember, now faith is the
substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen;
therefore, as you pray, pray a now prayer for healing and began to see yourself
walking uprightly and without pain. I trust what God’s word enough to

Miracles

God's Miracle:
I was so ecstatic to finally help Gerald get the children ready for bed tonight (I was unable to provide assistance before my wheelchair arrived because I was confined to one room/one spot).

Tonight, I prepared Hannah's cup of milk and Nile's bottle (with assistance from Miss. Hannah) (she was so happy to help me as she realizes that I am slightly limited). After Hannah enjoyed her milk, I attempted to relax her to get her prepared for bed; but Hannah did something really special... she climbed the wheelchair to sit with me. She wrapped her hands around my neck and held me... (so I thought that I was soothing her to get her ready for bed), but Hannah was soothing my troubled and worried soul... for some of you reading this you may not understand... but Hannah is not a "touchy-feely toddler"... she's independent and strong willed. If you ask her for a hug she may say "No" (with her lips poked out)... so you see... for Hannah to take some time to hold me and just BE with me... it was so very special. I am not sure how she knew that I was struggling emotionally (fear before my surgery), but somehow she did... she held me tight and said "lov' mami... mami hurt?"... I nodded and then you know what she did?... she twirled my hair... the short natural coils in the back of my head... she twisted my hair around her little index finger as she rested her head on my shoulder and held my neck with her other hand. I thought... "Oh my God! THANK YOU". I held Hannah close to me and prayed. As tears flowed from my eyes, I knew God was here... holding me, comforting me... uplifting me. This is the first time in my life that I felt God in such a special way... through my child. I am comforted... I am at peace...

The universe will truly give you what you need... when you need it... just take the time to listen, be open and allow GOD to speak to you.

Wheel Chair

This afternoon my wheel chair was delivered. I sat in it and sighed... I felt a sense of freedom... I rolled around the house to explore my surroundings (as if anything would be different)... but you know, it was... my home seemed special for a moment... I reconnected with my space and I felt as if I belonged... I was able to touch the walls, cross the thresholds and move again from room to room. Although I could not walk with my legs, this wheel chair was perfect... I was elated that I could do all that I did before my injury (okay.... well some things I did before my injury). Anyway, I called my mom (from my cell) and expressed to her my new found freedom (as I put dishes in the dishwasher, put a pot of water to boil on the stove, wiped the table my children ate on the night before, prepared dinner and answered the home phone when it rang)... I felt so emotional that I was able to do all of these things without assistance from anyone... I owned my home... I felt confident and self sufficient. The wheelchair really has helped to lift my spirits... I felt "free".

Surgery Scheduled

After careful review of my cat scan ... the doctor informed me that I must have surgery tomorrow, Friday morning at 11am (the procedure will last for at least 2 hrs.) I will be at the Emory Eastside Medical (Snellville) until Saturday afternoon. My injury is pretty bad, I am required to have 9 screws, a titanium metal plate and bone "filler" to replace shattered bone in my left leg. I will be in a wheel chair for approximately 8 - 12 weeks as I recover from surgery. My doctor believes that because I have a desk job that does not require physical exertion, that I can return to work in a wheel chair a week or two after surgery. Because I will be unable to drive, I simply need to coordinate my transportation. I have already researched the para-transit system and other car pool options. I am in good spirits and I plan to work from home maybe 2-3 days a week and go in the office the remaining days.

I will need physical therapy after the 12 week recovery period from surgery. The doctor believes that I have a 95 percent chance of having a functional left leg/knee. Hopefully, by the summer I will be able to jog in the park.

Home Instead

Gerald and I decided to hire a home care aid to assist me as I endure this injury. For the next three days while Gerald is at work and until my mom comes from Houston on Monday we will have someone in our home to prepare meals, do laundry, housekeeping and help me move when I need to use the bathroom. Thank God for all her/his blessings. I am so thankful to all our family and friends who are praying for us and supporting us with their encouraging words and actions.

I have to coordinate important meetings/conversations between the time I need to take my next drug (that's when the medication is wearing off and I am more alert)... When I am on these darn drugs, especially 30 min. after I take the drug, I am very relaxed and I go in and out of sleep uncontrollably... It's so freaking weird. I'll be reading, typing or even on the phone, then all of a sudden I dose off... time elapses then I wake up finding my fingers on the keyboard or holding a sheet of paper (then I have to struggle to remember what I was doing or who I was on the phone with... the person may still be on the line talking)... So if you are the victim of the side effects of the drugs I am taking... I apologize in advance... I think I dozed off twice trying to type this.... So I am trying to stay on the subject... In any case let me finish this posting before I doze...................

Injury

On Sunday night around 11:30pm I suffered a serious leg and knee injury. I thought I simply dislocated my knee, but after extreme pain and the results from the emergency room x-ray, we discovered that I have a serious injury that will require a metal plate and pins. My tibia bone and knee are broken. I was at home… Nile (my 11 month old son) fell off the bed (he’s okay), I was running to care for him (I was concerned about a possible neck injury)... then I tried to jump over the 30in. child safety gate. My attempted jump was unsuccessful and I fell fast and hard. I tried to break my fall by putting all my body weight and pressure on my left leg and knee. This caused my leg and knee to break.

Monday, Dr. Mines drained excess blood build up from my knee and Tuesday I had a cat scan. I am preparing for surgery sometime late next week. Dr. Mines will not operate until all the swelling is gone… so if you can imagine…. I am managing with a broken leg and knee and I take very potent pain medication every 4 hrs. I am immobile. This was a freak accident and I am still in shock!!!

Mourning

If I could have a moment in time to change back the clock I would... first, I would go back in time before my sister's death; second, I would not have gone to the school salon to get a "texturizer" put on my hair. These are two times in my life that I have mourned...deeply (although the mournings were at distinct levels... I still mourned). Because this is a hair blog... I will only share with you my journey of growing my hair back au naturel.

I have had many difficult days... when I wake up in the morning I see beauty and sometimes I see the pitiful result of a bad decision. I miss my long hair, I miss washing it and combing it, I miss the hair on my neck and back, I miss it blowing and flowing in the wind, and most of all, I miss the times that I can ever so slightly tilt my head, and toss my neck as my hair moves determined by my gestures.
How long must I grow my hair back so that it can be like it was before the chemical was put on my hair? I pray for my hair to grow back beautifully and quickly. I know that more than anything right now I need patience. My heart is broken, my crown and glory was damaged... but as I am in the process of restoring my crown and glory.... I restore my soul. As I embark on this new journey... I am renewing my spirit.

People make comments about the very long hair I recently cut off, or some say nothing... but their facial expressions really show me how they feel. I know that this journey is not one about others... but my own personal path. So, I am enduring this phase, it is trying, but I am a long sufferer. I sometimes have difficulty coping with the loss of the long hair that I grew and cared for so diligently.

The journey that I face is one of the soul and spirit... I am the courageous traveler... faithful and almighty....
Always give God the glory for the things she/he has done...
I welcome rebirth and embrace all that is extra ordinary.

Hair Care Suggestions

I want to share with you a few suggestions regarding natural hair care. I followed the routine noted below during (2002 - 2007)...

Shampoo & Conditioner:
I suggest shampooing your hair with curly hair products. Always use products that work with curly hair to define and strengthen the strands.

Suggested Products:
1) L'oreal VIVE Curl-Shampoo (better for short/mid-length natural hair)
2) Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo (Dry/Damaged Hair) (better for long natural hair)

For better results also use:
1) L'oreal VIVE Curl-Moisture Conditioner (better for short/mid-length natural hair)
2) Garnier Fructis Fortifying Conditioner (Dry/Damaged Hair) better for long natural hair)

(L'oreal Vive is specially formulated with Hydro-Proteins and shine enhancers to control curls, giving shape and definition while helping tame frizz. The system is now enhanced with increased cleaning and conditioning properties for healthy, soft, more vibrant curls.)

Deep Conditioner:
For deep conditioning I use the following products:
1) Lustrasilk Tea Tree Cholesterol - Intensive Therapy Hair Treatment
2) Mermade with Marine Life Protein - Deep Penetrating Cream Hair Treatment by L'oreal
(sometimes I mix these two products with hot oil and let them set on my hair for 20 - 30 minutes under a plastic cap and towel)

Hot Oil Treatment:
1) You may use regular Virgin Olive Oil (warm in microwave and put this in your hair as a hot oil treatment. Put on plastic cap and let set for 15 minutes (you can also mix in your favorite deep conditioning cremes listed above).

Okay now for three of the most important products: The LEAVE-INs:
1) ic (inter cellular) DEEP PENETRATING CREAM MOISTURIZER for extra dry hair and scalp (anti-breakage formula)
2) Hawaiian Silky Moisturizer & Curl Activator (you may use either the creme or liquid).
3) Care Free Curl Gold (Instant Activator with Moisturizers) 100% Oil Free (Non-dreasy) (dual conditioning for natural and/or curly hair).

The latter above three mentioned products are best for your hair. They are "CRACK" for my hair - I can't go a day without these three products. You may use them all together or seperately on different days (depending on what style/look you want).

Hair Grease: Indian Hemp

Other products I use:
Paul Mitchell: Moisture Condition (Instant Moisture Daily Treatment)
Garnier Fructis smoothing milk (frizz control)
Paul Mitchell: Condition (The Detangler)
Paul Mitchell: The Conditioner

Remember your hair may not immediately accept these products, but with a few regular uses you will notice a difference and in a month or so and over time (as your hair grows) you will definetly notice a difference. I PROMISE.

1) Use products for curly hair - this will help train and shape your naturally curly hair as it grows longer.
2) MOISTURE-MOISTURE-MOISTURE (Non-dreasy) (Always deep condition and moisturize your hair & scalp)
3) I get my ends professionally clipped once every 6 months (I go to the salon to get a deep condition and press - then I get my ends clipped).
4) Don't press your hair too often (no more than twice a year) - if you press your hair more than that it will loosen the curl and your hair will be unevenly curly/straight in some sections - wierd look - it won't work right.
5) You may need to purchase the above mentioned products at a beauty suppy store (Regular stores may not stock all of these products).

I decided to start this blog to chronicle this new journey in my life... a wife and working mother of two children... Hannah & Nile... (http://hassellfamily.babywindow.com ) I embark on this journey of recreating my crown and glory.

Today, I decided to get my hair cut very short (1/2 inch). After seven years of growing a beautiful crown of natural (unprocessed) hair, I decided (in December 2007) to "texturize" my hair to loosen the curl. I also wanted to wear my hair straighter (via press/flat iron) more often. After giving birth to two children, I wanted a change in my hair style (more versatile styles), so I thought the texturizer would be a good idea. So, I went to a school salon to allow a student to texturize my hair (because of cash optimization). After two "texturizer" treatments my hair started to fall out, thin, shed and break. Each time I washed my hair, combed or touched it, hair would break off and/or fall out. My hair was undoubtedly damaged and unhealthy. I grew frustrated with the extreme breakage and deeply regretted my decision to "texturize" my hair. So, today I decided to go to a reputable natural hair salon for a consultation.

After the consultation and discussing my options, I decided that healthy natural hair was more important than long unhealthy hair. So, all of my chemically altered hair was cut...
This journey will be challenging (emotionally), but I look forward to experiencing this new chapter of my life.

Lessons learned:
1) Never allow an unlicensed person to "experiment" with your hair
2) Research your hair salon and talk to your stylist about his/her hair care philosophy
3) Healthiest hair is well conditioned natural hair (NO Chemicals)
4) Take a daily multi vitamin & eat lots of fruits & vegetables (nutrition is important to healthy hair)
5) Exercise (reduces stress thus minimizing shedding of hair)
6) Drink lots of water (hair care/growth starts from the inside-out)
7) Prayer and meditation reduces stress
8) Daily affirmations creates positive self image
